The Amish Market. There aren’t even words to describe how amazing this place is. Have you ever been? You have? Then you know what I am talking about. You haven’t? Um, you need to go right now! If it’s Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, and you have an Amish market close to you, you need to get in your car and go. I love going to the Amish Market. They have so many delicious items to sample and the pretzels….oh my goodness the pretzels…more on those later. Taking a day trip to Lancaster, PA is one of my favorite things to do. I don’t get to go nearly as much as I would like because.. well.. I have 15 month old twins. But when I do go it is the most amazing culinary adventure ever! When I can’t make it to Lancaster, I get my fix at the Lancaster County Dutch Market, which isn’t in Lancaster County at all. Three days a week, people in the Amish community from Lancaster County, PA bring all sorts of goodies and sell them at this market in Germantown, MD. It is located conveniently close to my home! Yay for me!
My friend Abbie (first timer to the market) and I visited the Amish Market a couple weeks ago. I have been wanting to blog about it and she agreed to come along and help with the twins….oh and eat some amazing food! I don’t know if it’s just me but when I walk in to the market the lights shine bright and I hear beautiful voices singing, “Hallelujah, Hallelujah” (too dramatic?). The market is in the shape of a circle so you walk around it and stop at different venders along the way. First, the bakery. They have any sweet treat your heart could desire: pies, éclairs, cookies, breads, cakes, donuts, I could go on and on. There are lots of homemade breads to choose from, both sweet and savory. Their gourmet apple breads are amazing.
Next stop, and one of my favorites, is the cheese section. Oh this glorious cheese display. Not only do they
have a large variety to choose from but they have samples! So grab a toothpick and taste away! They carry slices and blocks of cheese, and many different flavors of cheese spreads. It’s really hard to walk away without buying some bagel chips and cheese spread to go with them. I decided on the Garlic Bagel Chips with Bacon Scallion spread. What a delicious combination!
Turn the corner and you are at the meat counter where they have high quality meats at great prices. Some of my favorites are the sausages, brisket, scrapple, and bacon. I haven’t gotten steaks from here yet but I plan on giving those a try soon. I highly recommend the Apple Cinnamon Pork Sausage. It is great for breakfast or brunch and has such great flavor. I also love the bacon! They carry pepper bacon, apple wood smoked, and hickory smoked. You can’t go wrong with which one you choose. They are all delicious.
Next stop is King’s BBQ Pit, where they have the most amazing fried and rotisserie chickens. I go for the chicken wings. The skin is so crispy and the meat juicy. No one does them better! Pair them up with some macaroni salad from the deli and you have the perfect meal.
Are you having fun on our tour? We are halfway done. Yes, this is a long post but the best is yet to come! Now it’s time for candy! They have recently rearranged this section and now offer chocolate dipped strawberries, Oreos, and even bacon! They also have many flavors of fudge and beautiful candied apples. I love that they added a little coffee shop so I was able to get my favorite drink, an iced coffee. There are so many candies I couldn’t even begin to tell you about them all but I do have lots of pictures so you can take it all in.
We have worked our way around to the Deli. I never leave the Amish market without getting a few salads from here. A few of my favorites are: ham salad, red skin potato salad, chicken crescents, and the macaroni salad.
Okay you made it! It’s time for the most amazing, most glorious pretzels you will ever have! They make them right there so you can watch the process. The regular soft pretzels are delicious but I always go one step further and get the stuffed pretzels. They stuff them with sausage links and cheese and let me tell you they are one of the best things I have ever eaten. A sausage pretzel and a lemonade and I’m good to go.
