Cava Mezze

Now that we are parents, Alex and I don’t go on nearly as many dates as we used to. We are lucky that our twins are really good at restaurants (I hope I am not jinxing that) but going to dinner just the two of us? It rarely happens anymore. A couple weeks ago though, we had a
spontaneous date night! It was 8pm, we had put the kids to bed, I had nothing in the works for dinner, and I needed to go to Verizon to program my new phone. Alex and I got a crazy look in our eyes and I said “Do you know what’s next to Verizon now? Cava!” I called my mom (who lives 2.3 minutes away) and she was available to come hang out at our house so we could go to dinner! Score!
We have been to Cava Mezze before at the Rockville, MD location when it was on Washingtonian’s 100 Best Restaurant List and it was delicious. So we wanted to give this new location in Olney a try.

Cava Mezze

Cava Mezze is a Greek restaurant with a commitment to culinary excellence and shared plates. Three childhood friends founded Cava in 2006 and now have five locations.

We went on a Wednesday night and were seated right away with no reservation needed. Our waiter was Dennis and he was very welcoming and gave us great recommendations. He is Greek so that was a plus. I had my heart set on a Peach Cocktail that I had at the other location and was totally in love with. I didn’t see it on the menu and asked Dennis about it. He said there are signature cocktails at each location so you get a different experience. Okay I totally get that. So he recommended I try the Blackberry Cocktail. I went with his recommendation and I am so glad I did. First of all, it is beautiful. I love a beautiful drink. And of course it tasted amazing to. Not too sweet but just right for me.

They start your meal with fresh house made pita bread that is served with olive oil and a spicy tomato paste.

For our first plate, we ordered the Saganaki. The cheese is called Kefalograviera. It is a sheeps milk cheese that they flambé tableside with lemon and brandy. We really enjoyed this dish. It is not a light way to start your meal but it was perfectly melted and delicious. And make sure you scrape up the cheese that gets stuck to the bottom of the skillet…that’s the best part.

We were going to order the shrimp but Dennis recommended the Crispy Prawns. Okay, I am going to admit something here. I used to be very weird about shrimp. They freaked me out. I wouldn’t even eat them until a few years ago. I am recovering now and I peel, cook, and eat shrimp BUT when these giant prawns came to the table with their heads still on, I was a little taken aback. Our waiter didn’t miss a beat and said “I have seen this before, I will take care of
it”. He removed the heads for us! Thank goodness he did. Now I could dig in! They were served wrapped in shredded phyllo with a citrus yogurt, bacon, hazelnuts, and honey. I loved this dish. It faintly reminded me of coconut shrimp when I would get a bite of the sweet honey mixed with the prawn and phyllo. So good! I did think that dish was a little pricey…..$17 :/

The street corn exceeded my expectations. It was served grilled still on the cob and slathered in a spicy aioli, feta cheese, and micro cilantro. Again a little pricey….$11 for 2 ears of corn and a mayo based sauce BUT it was so flavorful. I want to try and recreate it at home this summer.

The last dish we got was the Lamb Chops. Baby Chops served on top of crispy potatoes with lemon. The juices from the lamb dripped down onto the potatoes and the result was fantastic. The lamb was cooked perfectly.

Overall, we had a great experience at Cava Mezze. The service was great, and we liked the atmosphere. Like I mentioned, some dishes were a little expensive but we rarely let that stop us from ordering a dish. We like to try a little bit of everything and get the full experience of a restaurant. Everything we ordered was delicious and perfectly cooked. Thank you Cava Mezze!
