Day 2: Speckled Hen

I hope you didn’t forget that we are still on our Lancaster County Foodie Adventure! We have now come to dinner at Speckled Hen on Day 2. Yes, we have come back to Speckled Hen a second time because it is that delicious. We also found out that it was “Taco Night”, so how could we pass that up?

We ordered two starters: the Smoky Beef Nachos and the Chips and Guacamole. The nachos were some of the best I have ever had. Corn tortilla chips were topped with shredded cheese, jalapeno, verdant view beef (from a local farm in PA), roasted corn, and bell peppers. Sour cream and salsa was served on the side.

Now onto the tacos! My mom ordered the Kickin’ Chicken Tacos. Turmeric seasoned chicken lays inside flour tortillas along with bibb lettuce, cilantro, jalapeno sauce, and shredded cheese. This chicken had a lot of flavor from the turmeric but it wasn’t over powering. A little white rice on the side and a squeeze of lime and you are good to go!

Laura ordered the Sweet and Smoky Tacos. These were out of this world amazing and a great spin on breakfast for dinner. Caramelized onion and bacon is glazed in spicy honey and paired with roasted corn, bell pepper, and scrambled eggs. Look at these beauties…..

I went with the Beef and Queso Tacos. These are your classic tacos, simple and fresh. Flour tortillas filled with local beef, a queso sauce, bibb lettuce, and pico de gallo, boom done….delicious.

The twins didn’t get tacos but they did get one of the most amazing sandwiches ever, the Grilled Chunky Monkey. This grilled sandwich has crunchy peanut butter, Nutella, banana, and cinnamon. Who wouldn’t want to eat that every single day of their life?

Even though we were totally stuffed, we ordered coffee and dessert anyway, because we love to eeeaaatttt! We saw something on the menu that Laura has been dying to try, Affogato. Affogato is ice cream served with espresso. You pour the espresso down over the top of the ice cream and the result is magical. I went with a cup of regular coffee and a piece of Lemon Cheesecake.

This was the perfect ending to a great day in Lancaster County. Speckled Hen never disappoints. Their fresh and local plates are not what you expect when you walk into this coffee shop but it is the nicest surprise, isn’t it? We hope to be back sometime on a Wednesday night for “Burger Night”, stay tuned!
