Day 2: Olde Stone Guesthouse and Hillside Bulk Foods

Olde Stone Guesthouse

Good morning! Waking up at the bed and breakfast was so refreshing. Watching the sun come up over the corn fields, seeing horses grazing in the pasture, and being served a delicious homemade breakfast was a great way to start the day. I stayed in the Larkspur Room which was very comfortable and the twins were able to stay in their portable cribs in a spare room. Last night after dinner we went to a bookstore where I purchased a new book. I stayed up late on the couch in the living room reading and it was so peaceful. A home away from home. After waking up and getting ready for the day, we went out on the front porch swing to wait for breakfast to be served.

Florence, the innkeeper, had the dining room table set beautifully for us. Water, juice, and coffee were served as we waited for the other guests to join us. Once everyone arrived, Florence brought the food to the table, prayed over our meal, and sat to eat breakfast with us. I have never had an innkeeper pray and sit with us and I loved it! We were able to get to know her and she was really interested in what our plans were for the day. She also introduced us to the other guests to get conversations going.

Buttermilk Syrup.

Breakfast was delicious! She made her, I’m going to say famous, Buttermilk Syrup. My sister Laura has stayed with Florence before and actually got the recipe for this syrup and makes it quite often. We like to serve it with fruit at home which is totally life changing and amazing. It is the best syrup EVER! Florence served it alongside fluffy pancakes which was a heavenly combination. You could also make your own parfait with the yogurt, homemade granola, fresh fruit, and candied pecans. One of my favorite things to eat for breakfast is yogurt topped with all sorts of goodies so this was right up my alley. Yum! We also had delicious sausages.

After breakfast, I let Danny and Mackenzie run off some energy outside and of course we had to go pet the horses. My sister Laura and I both rode horses growing up, Laura still does, and we have passed on our obsession to Mackenzie. If she sees a horse she has to say hello. After the horses were thoroughly greeted, we got in the car to start another day of exploring. Our first stop was Hillside Bulk Foods.

Hillside Bulk Foods

Hillside Bulk Foods

Hillside Bulk Foods is an Amish grocery store that is a must visit every time we are in Lancaster County. I always stock up on everything I need for the baking section of my pantry. I don’t know what it is about it but I love the way everything is in clear bags. A lot of Amish stores sell their products this way and maybe it’s the foodie in me but I think it is very cool. As I walk around I get inspired thinking…I can put these in cookies or I have never seen this type of flour I will try it. It gets my creative juices flowing and I can’t wait to get home and transfer everything from the bags into my nicely labeled glass containers (I will have to do a pantry tour. I reorganized it last year and always make sure I have everything on hand to bake something up last minute). Not only do they have everything you could possibly need to stock your pantry but they have it at great prices.
